Sandy about to make landfall

It looks like Sandy is about to come ashore right over Cape May NJ.

Stormwaters rising

Check out these two shots from the Wheaton Branch Stormwater Ponds, one from 0839 this morning, the other (the one with more water!) from 1551 this afternoon. The whole place has turned in to one big lake ;)

Sandy approaches

Amazing how accurately the forecasters predicted the track of this storm so far. Sandy has turned to the west and is heading for the NJ shore.

Frankenstorm update

Sandy dumped rain here all night, but it looks like that's just the tip of the iceberg, with plenty more to come as Sandy approaches the NJ shore tonight. Currently, pressure is low and we have robust NW airflow.

Migrant exodus last night

Northeasterly winds off the top of Sandy (currently off South Carolina) seems to have set off a major exodus of nocturnal migrants in our area last night - presumably the last before the rain from Sandy moves in. Might be a good day for diurnal migrants, given the air flow.

Frankenstorm

Current predictions put Sandy coming ashore on the Delmarva peninsula around 0700 Tuesday morning. Things will probably get messy!

Migration activity tonight

A moderate signal this evening on the Sterling VA NEXRAD, moving on a NE-SW axis. Most of the action, however, is occurring through the Central Flyway, west of the cold front that currently stretches from the east end of Lake Ontario south to Louisiana.

Sandy's predicted track

The current predictions for the course of Hurricane Sandy have it making landfall on the New Jersey shore sometime Tuesday morning. It'll be interesting to see what storm-driven birds come along with her.

Hurricane Sandy

Here's an interesting article from the Washington Post on the possibility of Hurricane Sandy reaching the East Coast:

Strong migration signal tonight

The Sterling VA NEXRAD signal suggests there is heavy migration underway tonight. Here are the base reflectivity and velocity signals from a few minutes ago.

Here's the velocity signal from Sterling, VA, as promised.

I stopped by the ponds yesterday afternoon and caught a small flight of Turkey Vultures headed south. There were a few Sharp-shinned and Red-tailed Hawks moving with them. And this bird. Kinda groovy. Looks like he's going to Halloween as a King Vulture!

Migration tonight

Activity in the central states tonight, but the East Coast is quiet as rain moves off to the east.

Yesterday at the ponds -- Wheaton Branch Stormwater Ponds -- Oct 18, 2012

Migration of most species is slowing, e.g. Blue Jays, flickers and warblers. Pine Siskins still passing over though - two singles today. Will be interesting to watch how their irruption progresses this winter. There are already reports of sizable flocks around MD!

There's a strong signal from the stations west of Chicago this evening, but not much elsewhere.

Migration last night

Last night, there was an interesting banding pattern to the signal from the Sterling VA NEXRAD station, visible here in both the reflectivity and velocity signals. The bulk of activity, however, was down the center of the U.S.

Migrant exodus tonight

After a wet day, it looks like there will be some bird movement tonight as the rain moves out to the east. It's already kicking off to the west and south of here. Here's the local reflectivity and velocity NEXRAD signals, and the view of the eastern U.S.

Wilson's Warbler -- Wheaton Branch Stormwater Ponds -- Oct 7, 2012

Cool wet conditions followed the front that came through yesterday, but despite the difficult conditions, there were some interesting birds around. Highlight was a male Wilson's Warbler, followed by my first Golden-crowned Kinglet and Chipping Sparrow for the ponds. Actually, surprised the sparrow took so long - they are a common breeder around here :-P

Complete greenish brown hood, paler on throat, but obvious contrast with clearer yellow on lower breast. Smudgy transition from brownish to yellow. Prominent complete creamy white eyering. Bill pinkish at base of lower mandible. Upperparts, wings and upper tail greenish. Yellow underparts. Legs and feet dull pink. Flew up from ground amongst weeds into low branches of small tree, then ascended from branch to branch before flying off low to W across clearing and sweeping up into low branches of trees on W perimeter. No calls heard. Flight strong, fast. In view for 60s or so. Photos obtained. Searched but unable to relocate.
