Flying fish, Blackwater NWR, 01-24-2010

Driving round the auto loop at Blackwater on Sunday, we couldn't help but notice these dead fish stuck in the branches of bushes down at the water's edge. I can only assume they were killed by a recent freeze-thaw and then left stranded by the receding water? But here's another question that troubles me - how come they haven't been eaten by the hordes of gulls and Bald Eagles that hang out here? Or a raccoon for that matter? Since when were these scavengers that picky?
